What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain the core theoretical frameworks of the major talk therapy modalities — including CBT, psychodynamic, person-centred, ACT, DBT, and solution-focused approaches — and identify the clinical contexts each is best suited to
  • Describe how the brain processes trauma, stress, and emotional dysregulation, and connect these neurobiological mechanisms to therapeutic interventions
  • Apply polyvagal theory and nervous system principles to understand client behaviour and inform moment-to-moment therapeutic decisions
  • Construct a basic biopsychosocial case formulation for a presenting client, integrating psychological, neurological, and social factors
  • Demonstrate core counselling micro-skills — including empathic reflection, Socratic questioning, validation, and reframing — and know when to deploy each
  • Recognise the diagnostic features and neuropsychological profiles of common mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, and personality disorders
  • Navigate key ethical and professional challenges in therapy practice, including boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding, and managing countertransference
  • Evaluate emerging research in neuroscience and psychotherapy to critically assess new therapeutic approaches and avoid pseudoscientific claims

Foundations of Talk Therapy — Theoretical Frameworks & Modalities

Welcome to Module 1 of The REH Therapy School. Before exploring specific therapeutic techniques, it's essential to build a solid understanding of the foundations that underpin modern talk therapy — the theoretical roots, core assumptions, and evolving frameworks that shape how therapists think, listen, and intervene. In this module, you'll gain a clear overview of the major schools of thought that have defined the field, from their historical origins to their practical relevance in today's clinical landscape. This grounding will serve as your compass throughout the rest of the course, giving every technique and tool you learn a meaningful context and a strong theoretical home.

  • 1.1The Psychodynamic Tradition — From Freud to Relational TherapyIncluded
  • 1.2Person-Centred & Humanistic Approaches — Rogers, Maslow, and the Core ConditionsIncluded
  • 1.3CBT, ACT & Third-Wave Behavioural TherapiesIncluded
  • 1.4DBT, Solution-Focused, and Integrative ApproachesIncluded
2

The Neuroscience of Mind, Emotion & Therapeutic Change

Ground therapeutic practice in the biology of the brain. Students develop a working neuroscientific vocabulary and learn to connect brain structures, neurochemistry, and nervous system states directly to what they observe in the therapy room — and to why specific interventions work.

  • 2.1Brain Architecture & the Neuroscience of EmotionIncluded
  • 2.2Polyvagal Theory & the Therapeutic WindowIncluded
  • 2.3The Neuroscience of Trauma & StressIncluded
3

Mental Health Conditions — Diagnostic Profiles & Neuropsychological Mechanisms

Develop a clinically informed, neuropsychologically grounded understanding of the most common mental health presentations therapists encounter. Students learn to recognise diagnostic features without pathologising, and to connect symptoms to underlying mechanisms that inform treatment selection.

  • 3.1Depression & Anxiety Disorders — From Symptom to MechanismIncluded
  • 3.2PTSD, Complex Trauma & DissociationIncluded
  • 3.3OCD, Personality Disorders & Neurodevelopmental PresentationsIncluded
4

Core Counselling Skills — The Craft of Therapeutic Conversation

Move from theory to technique. Students develop and practise the micro-skills that make therapy work moment to moment — empathic reflection, Socratic questioning, validation, reframing, and the therapeutic use of silence and pacing — with rigorous feedback at every stage.

  • 4.1Empathy, Active Listening & Reflective RespondingIncluded
  • 4.2Socratic Questioning, Reframing & Cognitive TechniquesIncluded
  • 4.3Validation, Formulation-Sharing & PsychoeducationIncluded
5

Ethics, Professional Practice & the Therapist's Self

Navigate the complex ethical, legal, and relational terrain of professional therapy practice. Students examine real dilemmas around boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding, and countertransference — and develop the self-awareness, supervision literacy, and professional frameworks needed to practise safely and sustainably.

  • 5.1Boundaries, Confidentiality & SafeguardingIncluded
  • 5.2Countertransference, Therapist Wellbeing & SupervisionIncluded
  • 5.3Working Across Difference — Culture, Power & Social Justice in the Therapy RoomIncluded
6

Evidence, Integration & Critical Practice

Equip students to be critical consumers of research, confident integrators of neuroscience and psychotherapy, and practitioners capable of evaluating new therapeutic claims rigorously. This capstone module ties all prior learning together and prepares students to go on learning throughout their careers.

  • 6.1Reading the Evidence — RCTs, Common Factors & the Dodo Bird VerdictIncluded
  • 6.2Emerging Neuroscience & Avoiding Pseudoscience in TherapyIncluded
  • 6.3Capstone Integration — Building Your Therapeutic IdentityIncluded
7

Knowledge Quiz

Like any course worth it salt...it need to have a way of testing your understanding of the topic/subject you have been studying. This why I have added 40 multiple choice questions here to test both your understanding, but also help you refresh elements of each module in order to enhance your learning and proficiency of the topic/subject.

Robert Edmanson-Harrison

Robert Edmanson-Harrison

I've spent years sitting with the question that anyone serious about therapy eventually faces: why does this actually work? My background spans counselling practice, psychotherapy training, and a deep fascination with what neuroscience is beginning to reveal about the mechanisms beneath every good therapeutic conversation. I designed this school because I kept finding that training programmes forced a choice — you either learned the clinical skills or you learned the science. I wanted both, integrated and honest about what we know and what we don't. I'm not here to hand you a toolkit of techniques. I'm here to help you think — about clients, about the brain, about the profound responsibility of sitting with someone in their most vulnerable moments. I hope this school challenges and equips you in equal measure.
